Mama's Quilt There are many material things I hold dear to my heart because of what they represent to me. I know that I am very sentimental and anyone who is not, I guess wouldn’t understand me. But, those closest to me know that I can almost tell you where anything and everything came from, who gave it to me or where I bought it, and why I am holding onto it. My world around me can give me much comfort and pleasure because of memories. One of the things I treasure most is a quilt my mother made for my twin bed I slept in growing up. At first, my sister and I shared a twin bed until we moved into a four room house from a three room house. I was seven then. This gave Mama and Daddy their own bedroom and one for me and my sister to share. That was when Mama made me my very own quilt. As a seamstress, Mama was very accomplished., so it is made of scrap material and material taken from worn out dresses and skirts she had made for us and herself, blouses and gowns, and even a bedspread she made for hers and Daddy’s bed. Now, the quilt is a little tattered and torn, the colors aren’t quite as bright, but it is more beautiful to me than ever. I use it draped over the back of a chair that once was Mama’s. Whenever I want to “go back home”, I can sit in that chair, lean back against the quilt, and I feel like I am in my Mama’s arms, feeling her love, and being comforted. I know it isn’t real, but doing this in the remembrance of what it represents makes it alive in my heart. If looking back to what this represents to me can be so real, isn’t that why Jesus has asked us to take the bread and the wine in remembrance of Him. It isn’t that we are partaking truly of His flesh and blood. But, to put in our mind the awareness that He is real and was once flesh and blood as we are brings reality to His being. This, in turn, brings reality to His life, death, resurrection, and the hope we have through salvation.
Reflect:
I know God blesses us with things we enjoy, but really, these are not the true
treasures of life. We have One treasure and that is the “Gift” God has given us
of His son Jesus and the life He gave on the cross to save us from our sins. To
find the true comfort I need any day, I know He is the treasure in my heart that
will be there always to give me joy, peace and love.
